There are many obvious reasons why living in Mississippi sucks. First, we are not only the most obese state, but we are in a constant battle with Louisiana and Arkansas as to who is the poorest. It is like we truly make an effort to be there. Second, dating in Mississippi is not only limited due to the amount of people who live in the state, but it also certainly guarantees that you will be dating someone who is either full of STD's, is divorced, has multiple children from multiple parents, or all of the above. And third, the infrastructure in the entire state is worthless, making it all the more difficult to get to the two or three places in the entire state where there are things that even remotely resemble some form of entertainment.

The bottom line is this: If you have ever seen anyone from Mississippi talk on camera, i.e. during Katrina, that person truly does represent the entire state (myself excluded of course).

Anyway, what I really wanted to talk about has to do with the fact that no one can be a true movie critic and live in Mississippi. The consequences from the list above trickles down into the daily lives of Mississippians state-wide. And, unless you have money and can afford the gas, you are not going to see the movies the real movie critics are raving about.

Because of its audience, it is no wonder why Mississippi is not a haven for major studios and their precious Oscar-worthy movies. The people of Mississippi simply do not require that kind of brain power. Unless your movie is titled Transformers, the people here simply don't care.

I heard a nasty rumor that Mississippi will get The Wrestler on January 16th. My fingers are crossed that the idiots of this state will not see it based on it's title alone.

A Brief Reality Letter to Brett Ratner

September 25th 2008 03:54
Hurry! Go wash your face.

Brett Ratner is a hack. Seriously, he has to be one of the worst directors ever. And he is constantly on the airwaves talking about awesome projects he would like to ruin. Below is what Ratner had to say about Batman in an interview with MTV.

“As a kid, Batman was my thing,” Ratner said. “I’m a little jealous that I didn’t get to direct it, although Nolan did a great job. But there are so many characters in the Batman series, so many characters that I love, that the opportunities for spin-offs are endless.”

YDKS Movies has written a brief, but very appropriate letter to Mr. Ratner outlining just a few of the many reasons why he would be the worst choice ever to direct a Batman movie. Check it out, and let me know your thoughts on the billion dollar director.

At Disney's big keynote event at the Kodak Theater today in Hollywood, Johnny Depp was the golden boy.

In keeping with earlier rumors, Depp has been cast as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's upcoming 3-D live action/motion capture version of Alice in Wonderland. Burton's new film will begin principal photography in November and is slated for a March 5, 2010 release.

If that wasn't enough, Depp is going to be playing Tonto in the Jerry Bruckheimer produced big-screen adaptation of the Lone Ranger. Pirates of the Caribbean writers Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio have begun writing the script. No further dates have been established.

And speaking of Pirates of the Caribbean, it was also announced that Depp would be returning for a fourth movie.

How excited are you about another POTC? I know I am!

Stanley Kubrick is a Pack Rat

September 24th 2008 16:07
Earlier this month, as part of /Film's wonderfully hit-and-miss Video of the Day feature, Peter Sciretta posted a video titled Stanley Kubrick's Boxes.

The documentary chronicles the 5 year long voyage of documenter Jon Ronson as he pours through literally thousands of boxes containing the precious framework research that Kubrick used as the foundation for his masterpieces

The Dark Knight Blu-Ray Details

September 22nd 2008 16:47

The DVD/Blu-ray release of the Dark Knight is inching ever closer, and the red X's on my calendar are starting to add up. The release is said to be in time for the holiday season, and the re-release of The Dark Knight into IMAX theaters nationwide should be enough to keep us all satisfied through January

What The....

March 12th 2008 04:19

So I'm rushing this 2500 word paper for Caribbean Sociology Class, you know that paper i just had to be delinquent about. Far be it from the mental masturbation of procrastination, or the late night tiredness that kicks in as the culprit for loopy ideas to write in an academic essay. The aha! moment came when i thought if I can quote books, other academic papers, websites and newspapers... why not films?

The African in Film

February 16th 2007 00:05
Yesterday I indulged my inner nerd and actually burrowed some books from UWI's library. Nope, not books for any of my courses but things that I'm interested in. What else but film?

I got two books Black City Cinema by Paula J. Massood and Slaves on Screen by Natalie Zemon Davies. The interesting part is to actually see what we commonly observe in mainstream filmmaking intellectualised on an academic level: the fact that the African is still under represented or grossly misrepresented in films and media

Writing the Script

October 12th 2006 20:26
Everything starts with an idea. A concept. You take your messy mind and you try to put it to use. You write down that idea. And somehow it does not seem as grand as you dreamt.

So you rewrite it. And you rewrite it again. You think visually. What would appeal to an audience watching my film
